Sales Tax Calculator
Enter a price and tax rate to calculate the sales tax amount and total price. The calculator includes preset tax rates for all 50 US states plus Washington DC, so you can select your state from a dropdown instead of looking up the rate. You can also enter a custom rate for any other jurisdiction.
A tax-included reverse calculation mode lets you work backwards from a total price to find the pre-tax amount and the tax portion — useful when a receipt shows only the total, or when you're pricing products that need to include tax in the displayed price.
State rates shown are the base state rates and do not include local (city or county) taxes, which can add 1-5% in many areas. For the exact combined rate at your address, check your state's tax authority website. This tool runs entirely in your browser and stores nothing.

Frequently asked questions
Which US states have no sales tax?▼
Five states have no state sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon. However, Alaska allows local jurisdictions to levy their own sales taxes, so some cities and boroughs in Alaska do charge sales tax.
Are the rates shown the total tax I will pay?▼
No — the rates listed are the base state rates only. Many states allow cities and counties to add local taxes on top. For example, the California state rate is 7.25%, but the combined rate in Los Angeles is 9.5%. Check your local rate for the exact amount.
How does the tax-included reverse calculation work?▼
In tax-included mode, the calculator divides the total price by (1 + tax rate) to find the pre-tax price, then subtracts to find the tax portion. For example, if the total is $107 and the tax rate is 7%, the pre-tax price is $107 / 1.07 = $100, and the tax is $7.
Do all products have the same sales tax rate?▼
No. Most states exempt or reduce rates for groceries, prescription drugs, and clothing. Some states have special rates for prepared food, vehicles, or digital goods. This calculator applies one rate to the entered amount — adjust the rate if your item falls under a special category.
